Culture, Identity, and Society

Culture, Identity, and Society have been prevailing themes throughout the semester in English.  We have been taught to look and analyze everything about them that we see.  This class has opened up my eyes to a lot of things that  I never realized before all of the different forms of rhetoric that were used in.  Using this you could understand more about different cultures and how they work and how people relate to them.  This theme was all throughout the reading and in some of the assignments it was very evident.  To understand someone's identity or a society you must analyze them and put yourself in their shoes.

Final Course Reflection

Over the course of this semester this class has taught me to look at things in a totally new different light.  It taught me to look at everything and examine the shape lighting wording and every little detail of it to see what forms of rhetoric it used.  The class has made me do assignments that reinforced this knowledge.  For my visual rhetoric essay I did Mac vs. PC.  Just this assignment by itself made me learn how the three different forms of rhetoric are used and integrated into every part of society.  Everything plays into it including lighting, wording, and my other things.  This class also taught me how to use many different forms of research and how to integrate technology into projects and research.  This class overall has been very beneficial and taught me many things about rhetoric and research.

Collaborative Challenge

1.  What format will your presentation take?  We are using iMovie and powerpoint.  The imovie will not only allow us to use photos and put music over them but also to play videos to aid in the portraying of your point.  The powerpoint will be used to make a formal argument on some point of the argument and allow the use of different color schemes and other types of visual aid in the project.

2.  What materials do you plan to use in your presentation?  We are using different computer programs like iTunes for music and iMovie with the movie portion.  We are also using powerpoint.  The use of cameras and video recorders will also be implemented in the project.

3.  What might a potential outline for your presentation?  The storyboard we came up with will serve as our main outline.   After the introduction sports will be the topic.  After sports the academics will be the main focus.  Once the academics have finished the next topic will be student life.  Coming off of student life will be the campus location which is somewhat relevant.

At a Glance

After reading over my paper I found some key critical mistakes.  Grammatical Errors and formatting errors were scattered throughout the paper.  I made my own feedback sheet on my paper giving myself critiquing points of things I could do better on my next draft.  I compared these to the peer reviews that were given to me.  I tried to look for different things that my group may have missed.  Reading it aloud helped when a sentence didn't make sense because hearing it out loud opened up my other senses to mistakes.  Overall my own review was very productive and it is going to help me write my next draft.  After getting back my rough draft that was taken up in class I realized more formatting errors in the paper.  I need to make sure my paper runs a little better and has a more organized flow.  Transition statements will be key in making sure that the flow of the paragraphs is good and will strengthen my argument.

Multimedia Assignment

I think the multimedia assignment would be the easiest if it was a short film.  It would be the most creative and easy to work with along being on hands.  It would be the easiest to come up with ideas for the film.  It would be useful because it can be put onto the internet through youtube and reach a large audience.  It would also be easy to show the class and they could get into it.  Compared to a podcasts it is more creative because you have to incorporate visual aids just as much as dialogue in the film.

Questions:

1.  What thematic elements could you add to the film to improve it
2.  What controversial issue will be potrayed

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined in Webster's Dictionary as to steal and pass of the ideas or words of another as yours.  Plagiarism is an addicting habit, it may seem harmless at first but it can hinder you in so many ways.  It is against the law to plagiarize and you can get into some serious trouble with it, it is not something to play around with. For example it may get you kicked out of college or fail a class.  Nothing comes from plagiarism, there is no gain whatsoever from it.  Also besides being morally wrong and unethical plagiarism can hurt more than you.  Anyone that knew you were plagiarizing can get in trouble too.  I have a personal experience with plagiarism, I did not plagiarize but helped someone with a paper and they were similar when we turned them in.  The problem was sorted out and no one was in trouble.  This is just a case though that could have been worse.  The general rule of thumb is you can help, but don't let them see.  If you let a person see a paper you have written to help them out there is more of a chance they will be similar and may be more identical than you think.  If you get caught plagiarizing and get kicked out of college, good luck getting into another university.  That is why it is super important to cite sources correctly in a paper.  The best way to make sure that you will not plagiarize is to make a research log and keep a tally of all of your search results and sources you find.  This way you will not get confused and make a mistake on citations.

Research Log

I have decided to make my research log in a Word document, this way I can type whatever I want and have it all in one place to make it easily accessible.  This way I can date it and keep up with the research I am doing.  I like the idea of keeping it in a Word document because I don't feel as locked in as on this blog; personal preference really.  This way I am able to look at all my log at once and not have to flip through the log on the blog to find out where a certain topic I am looking for is.

Three paragraph free write

My research paper is on illegal immigration and its controversial issues.  My main focus is going to be on events leading up to how the problem got so bad.   Another part of my paper will be maybe some proposed opinions on how to correct the problem.  This paper will focus mainly on illegal immigration from Mexico to America.  Granite there is illegal immigration from other countries but in order to shorten the research available I am going to focus on immigration from Mexico.

Some sources that I will use in this paper will include but not be limited to: newspapers, magazines, government websites, journals, websites etc.  The most effective of these I think will be government web sites and newspapers.  These both ill contain facts and figures about the subject while also giving a background on how the problem got this way.

There are a few problems I foresee with researching this topic is it may be a little to broad, I will have to limit what I talk about because there are many ways to go with this.  There is a lot of information on this topic and it ill is difficult to sort through stuff that is not relevant to my specific topic on this subject and get the necessary information I need for my research.

Questions on Research Topic

Border Patrol in America
1.  Why might my audience care about this topic?  What might they already know about it?  The audience will probably care a lot about this topic because it is affecting almost all Americans.  They might already know some statistics on this topic but it also might have affected them personally also.
2.  How does this topic help me address the assignment's purpose?  Will this topic expand my learning?  How can i shape this topic into a purpose that will interest my audience?    This topic will help me get to the assignments purpose because in it I can develop an argument and make valid points to try and prove my argument.  I think this topic will expand my learning because there is a lot of research on this topic and it is a very controversial topic in America today.  I can use different forms of rhetoric like pathos, logos, or ethos to keep my audience interested.
3.  Does this topic seem rich enough to help me write a paper of the length asked by the assignment?  Does it seem complex enough for the assignment?  What is happening locally/nationally/internationally around this topic?  This topic seems very rich in information, there is much debate and controversy surrounding the subject.  The subject is very complex there are many rules and regulations that are being broken every day by illegal immagrants coming into the nation.  This subject is very complex and definitely enough for the assignment because there is a lot of controversy over it and much debate.  There is much on this subject going on locally and nationally because it is taking away american jobs and all the money that is going to illegal immigrants is leaving the country.
Google Search-  There is a lot of interest in the topic there are many topics and articles on this subject.  There are many differing opinions on the subject and how it should be handled.  Lots of different subject matter on the topic.  The web pages just give other links to other sites on the subject.

Super Bowl Ad

My favorite super bowl ad was the Dorito's commercial where they guy had the snow globe and he said it was his crystal blog.  This commercial appealed to me because it uses all pathos.  It definitely played into the emotions of everyone through humor.  The guy says his crystal ball (the snowglobe) says there is gonna be free dorito's at work.  The man he is talking to is skeptical but the guy with the snowglobe throws it into a vending machine full of dorito's and everyone starts taking them.  The scenes flip and the man that was skeptical has the snowglobe and tells it he wants a raise, then carelessly he throws it and hits his boss in the groin.  The commercial didn't have much to do with dorito's besides the vending machine but it was very funny and everyone will remember it because pathos is the best way to grab the audience.

Reflecton on Visual Rhetoric Paper

Kim Frodge's Paper- This paper was about a Kellog's ad from the WWII era about overcoming the superficial propaganda that women had to look a certain way.  I did not know that Kellog's ever did anything like this, I just thought they were all about cereal.  I think it is a good idea though because it gets a message out to a lot of people about that though.  She used the rhetorical terms in her paper and explained how the ad used them to draw in the reader.

Virginie Cebe's Paper- This paper was very interesting to me because it took something I would not usually be interested in and made me look at it in a different light.  The ad was about Loreal ads and their use of persuasion by using celebrities in their ads.  She also explained about how the ads try and grab the audience by making claims like their creams are better than surgery.  She goes on to explain all the different uses of rhetoric in the ads.  It made me think to look at more ads that I ususally wouldn't normally look at.

Thesis Statement

The ad shows comical satire between Mac and PC which tries to persuade the viewer to buy Apple computers by poking fun at the lack of competency by PC to perform or be as user friendly as the Mac.

Visual Rhetoric Assignment

This is an Apple Computer commercial.  Most people know these two iconic figures.  The man in the suit is supposed to represent a PC whereas the guy on the write is supposed to represent a Mac.  These ads merely poke fun at PC's and make mac look superior to them by comical antics.

1.  Does the image attempt to persuade the audience?  Yes this image does try and persuade the audience.  In this photo the PC is to make his stand and not give up on Windows new operating system Vista.  This is an attempt to make fun of how Windows is trying to get people to buy Vista even though it doesn't work.
2.  Are there sufficient elements in the image to analyze?  Well there is a lot of elements in this picture but there is only so much.  There are many more images just like this one with different elements in them.
3.  What do you know about the author or the intended audience?  Well I know the intended audience is made for teenagers and young adults.  The try and make PC look like "your dad's computer".  They make the Mac look urban and more user friendly.  They play more to people who are interested more in graphics and photos than the traditional business of computers.
4.  What's your own interpretation of this image?  My interpretation of this image is that it is very satirical.  The ads are kind of a dry humor.  They appeal by using the means of pathos because they are humorous.

Bio

My name is Philip Sobash.  I attend Clemson University and my major there is Biological Sciences.  After I graduate Clemson I hope to go on to medical school.  I want to become on Oncologist.  In my spare time when I am not doing work I like to do absolutely nothing.  I could just sit around all day and watch tv, eat, and go to sleep and be perfectly happy.  My hobbies include politics and sports.  I played football and golf in high school.  I was also a class representative in student government in high school.  My hometown is Irmo, SC.  I have lived in Ohio, Tennessee, and Georgia also.  I attended Ben Lippen High School in Columbia, South Carolina.  My goal in life is to become a doctor so I can help people who are less fortunate and need help.

Rhetoric View on Ad in Class

This is not the exact picture but it is similar.  There are many visual rhetoric's in the picture in the book on page 46.  The doors are open to make it seem like it has wings like it is about to take off.  Saab cars are made by jet engineers.  It is a good advertising angle.  The text in the advertisement reinforces what the picture already says.  The ad appeals to car enthusiasts.  Most of the ad is taken up by the car, it is black and ominous on the page.  it wants you to take in the whole care as the main focus.  The ad is set in the dark to accentuate the headlights on the car making it seem more like a jet about to take off in the night.

Everyday Rhetoric

This morning I woke up for classes and checked my emails and a pop up came up for a free cruise in the Bahamas for two. I closed my computer and walked down the hall to go the stairs a piece of paper with Uncle Sam on it was on the door; it said "I need you to buy a guitar".  It was an ad for someone selling a guitar.  When I walked to Hunter Hall for my first class there was a sign saying that there would be selling lab coats and goggles for labs starting next week for 20 dollars.  My next class in Brackett Hall there was a sign saying they would be selling dissection kits for 15 dollars tomorrow before Biology class for lab.  After class I went back to my dorm and watched some tv.  There was a commercial with Billy Mays on how to mend your clothing with some kind of glue stuff.  When I went to dinner there was a sign in Schilleter for Gillette men shaving gel with a guy who was clean shaving, nice face on the front holding a bottle of the shaving cream.  There is so much rhetoric I see ever day.  The cruise was a big one, it was a pop up so you automatically look at it without really thinking about it.  It used visual rhetoric appealing to you by showing the cruise ship docked offshore of an island.  The sign about the guitar was very obvious, it was posted in an inconspicuous location so it would get more attention.  It used an ethos angle trying to tie in Patriotism in with the purchase of buying the guitar  The signs selling lab coats and dissection kits were not very intuitive, they were very plain and just trying to get the information out.  There was no real selling point or persuasiveness involved.  The commercial with Billy Mays used visual persuasion, he was trying to persuade you to buy the product by showing you all it could do. The Gillete shaving gel was probably the most provocative sign.  It was in a crowded public place and was lit up for everyone to see, it was visually appealing to the eye it used visual rhetoric to sell to the consumer.
